If on a future visit to North Myrtle Beach you get the feeling that something has changed — the roads seem wider, the view more spacious — you won’t be imagining things. There are $6.5 million dollars worth of long awaited improvements in the works for Ocean Boulevard in North Myrtle Beach.
The area first affected will be the widening of Ocean Boulevard from 15th Avenue South to 28th Avenue South. This project will benefit not just the businesses along Ocean Boulevard but also their suppliers as well. Traffic won’t get backed up due to trucks being double parked to make their deliveries to businesses along this stretch of road. When it comes to your tax dollars, rest assured they’re not being increased to pay for this. The South Carolina Department of Transportation will pay for this project at a cost of $3.5 million dollars.
The City of North Myrtle Beach and Santee Cooper are orchestrating and paying for a second project, also along Ocean Boulevard, to move all overhead utilities to underground. Pat Dowling, the spokesperson for the City of North Myrtle Beach said it is a way to help prevent residents and business owners from losing power during a natural disaster like a hurricane. The city and Santee Cooper will share the $3 million dollar cost of this project.
The underground conversion project is scheduled to begin in fall or winter of 2014. The road widening project in the same area won’t begin until 2015.
