Read on for your comprehensive traveler’s guide to Cherry Grove, SC.

Cherry Grove Beach History

The Cherry Grove Plantation, which dominated the region in the early 1700s, gave the seaside town its name. The property was gradually sold throughout the years, and a piece became Cherry Grove Beach.

Early Cherry Grove consisted primarily of petrol stations, wide open spaces, and the renowned “swing bridge,” built in 1935 and restored in 1980. Cherry Grove has served as many people’s home away from home since the 1950s.

South Carolina’s coast is steeped in centuries-old history and culture, unlike most southern beach communities, which emerged from sandy plains of brush and bramble for around five decades. You can’t avoid this even when staying in the most cutting-edge oceanfront resorts.

So don’t be surprised if you indulge in the region’s famed Lowcountry cuisine, shag dance under a pavilion, purchase locally crafted Gullah goods, or explore a 200-year-old town a short drive from the many vacation rentals and beach homes that dot the coastline.

Cherry Grove Pier

Cherry Grove Pier offers some of the best fishing on the Carolina coast and is the focal point of all the action. Its platform extends 985 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. It holds numerous state and national fishing records, including the largest tiger shark ever caught with a rod and reel, weighing 1,780 pounds and measuring almost 16 feet!

However, records were created to be broken, and you might be the one to do it! Today, you can try your luck by renting rods, reels, and bait from the pier. Although it’s unlikely that you’ll catch a sixteen-foot tiger shark, pier staff members are happy to offer advice on how to catch your next meal. Of course, you can also bring your equipment. If you’re using your own pole, a one-day fishing pass costs $3.

Depending on the time of year, you can expect to find summer trout, king mackerel, and flounder, among many other species. Fishermen and families have been visiting the Cherry Grove Pier since it opened to enjoy excellent fishing and incredible sea and coastline views.

In terms of hurricanes, the Cherry Grove Pier has a vivid past. Hurricane Hugo, which left a wide trail of devastation across South Carolina in 1989, demolished the pier. After being repaired, a two-story observation deck was built, quickly becoming a sought-after tourist attraction.

Access to the preserve’s more than seven acres of interpretive walkways is made possible by a network of raised boardwalks and viewing docks not far from Heritage Drive.

At these stations, informative signage lists the many different types of flora, animals, fish, and birds that may be found in this area. You may reach this park by boat and leave your kayak, canoe, or other watercraft at the dock while you spend some time taking in the lush scenery.

Outdoor Activities

Whether you enjoy your condo’s hot tub or lazy river, test your drive at some of the region’s world-class golfing, or stroll along the Grand Strand, there is something for everyone. Boaters, miniature golf enthusiasts, hunters, anglers, retirees, shoppers, shaggers, and world travelers will all enjoy Cherry Grove’s endless array of activities.

But, of course, the beach is among Cherry Grove’s biggest attractions! One of the main reasons to visit South Carolina in the first place is because the beach is free and available right outside your hotel or vacation home.

In addition, Cherry Grove Oceanfront Park is a small event area with a gazebo for events such as parties, meetings, religious gatherings, and more (after obtaining the necessary permits, of course).
